Preheat oven to 200°C. Peel potatoes and slice into ½ cm thick slices. Brush the base and sides of a baking dish with oil and place 1/3 of the sliced onions on base of dish.
Add the chopped garlic. Cover the onions with sliced potatoes in overlapping layers. Continue layering the sliced potatoes, onions, finishing with a layer of potato.
Season with salt and pepper and a pinch of nutmeg. Pour on the milk which should come ¾ of the way up. Sprinkle with grated cheese and cover with baking paper and then alfoil.
Place in a preheated oven and bake until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a skewer. Approx 1 hour.
Remove the alfoil and baking paper and continue baking until the top turns golden.
